If Not Us, Who? A School-Wide Approach to AI Competency Using UNESCO’s Framework
Artificial Intelligence is reshaping education—but are schools equipping teachers with the skills and confidence to lead this transformation responsibly? This workshop shares how The American International School of Muscat (TAISM) has embraced UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework for Teachers to guide professional learning, policy development, and school-wide implementation.
Participants will gain insights into how TAISM used the UNESCO framework’s five dimensions—human-centered mindset, ethics, foundations and applications, pedagogy, and professional learning—to structure a multi-year approach to building AI capacity. Through snapshots of in-house professional development sessions, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and student partnerships, attendees will see how AI competency-building can be both practical and inspiring.
The workshop will highlight concrete tools and instructional strategies used at the “acquire,” “deepen,” and “create” levels of teacher development. It will also address challenges such as staff skepticism, equity of access, and ethical concerns, offering ideas for scaffolding growth regardless of a school’s size or starting point.
Designed for school leaders, coaches, and curriculum coordinators, this session invites participants to reflect on their own context and walk away with adaptable strategies to move their faculty forward. In the age of generative AI, developing teacher agency, judgment, and collaboration around AI isn’t optional—it’s essential. If not us, who?

Dr. Kevin Schuttinger is the High School Principal at The American International School of Muscat (TAISM), where he leads innovation in teaching, learning, and future fluencies. With over 15 years of experience in U.S. and international schools, Kevin has guided system-wide initiatives in AI integration, competency-based learning, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
At TAISM, he has spearheaded the development of a comprehensive approach to artificial intelligence in education, using UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework to shape teacher learning, student engagement, and school policy. His leadership emphasizes human-centered and ethical use of technology, preparing students and teachers alike for a rapidly changing world.
Kevin holds a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Minnesota and has presented internationally on AI, innovation, and personalized learning. He is passionate about empowering educators, fostering inclusive school cultures, and designing future-ready learning environments.
