Just because AI does what you asked for, should you accept it? Encountering and handling ethical dilemmas when teaching with AI
Most educators use AI with the hope that it’ll complete our requests – but what if the output ends up being something we feel ethically conflicted about?
A student might prompt AI to generate a Disney character for a poster design task, and if the AI model agrees, should we ask the student to reject the output out of respect for copyright?
What if a student co-creates a short story with AI and the characters make ideologically extreme statements – should a teacher intervene and instruct the student to re-prompt to ‘tone it down’, or would that be an overreaction that undermines creative license?
And if, as an ever-busy teacher, we find ourselves generating entire mock papers that are as good as the official past papers, would using a ‘derivative work’ like this be tolerating IP ‘grey areas’?
While this session doesn’t seek to give clean-cut answers, the hope is that I’ll share my personal experiences, and through this surface very real ethical dilemmas that AI-fluent educators will increasingly face, offering an open space for us all to discuss how we have each dealt with similar situations.
