The Photograph Is No Longer Just a Photograph
AI has changed the safeguarding conversation around student images.
A photograph of a child can now be copied, manipulated or transformed into convincing synthetic media with very little technical knowledge. Yet many school image policies and consent processes were created for a very different digital world.
This practical session will explore what schools can actually do about it.
Rather than focusing on the technology or creating fear around AI, we will look at how teachers and school leaders can rethink everyday decisions around photographing, publishing and sharing student images.
Participants will explore:
- What information are we really exposing when we publish a child’s image?
- Is parental consent enough in an AI-enabled world?
- Simple alternatives to always publishing identifiable faces.
- A practical “before we publish” framework for teachers and communications teams.
- How schools can review and update their existing image and social media policies.
- What to consider when manipulated images, audio or video involving students or staff appear online.
The session will be grounded in real school practice and will give participants practical strategies and a simple framework they can take back to their schools immediately.
The aim isn’t to stop schools celebrating children or sharing learning. It is to help us keep doing those things while being more thoughtful about what we make permanently public.
Takeaway
Participants leave with:
- A practical framework for reviewing their school’s current approach to student images.
- Simple changes they can implement straight away.
