A Student-Centered Approach to Using Generative AI in Literacy Instruction

In this session, participants will learn how to thoughtfully integrate generative AI to support literacy instruction in middle and high school classrooms. Grounded in an AI Fluency framework, the session positions generative AI as a tool that extends and strengthens literacy skills learning rather than replacing or competing with it. The workshop will examine specific strategies to support reading comprehension and analysis, deepen the writing process, and act as a third point of feedback for student iteration. Through hands-on exploration, teachers will design approaches that keep student voice and cognition at the center of the work. Participants will leave with concrete tools, classroom-ready strategies, and resources to help students responsibly co-create and deepen their literacy skills with generative AI.
